History

Since 1954, amateur astronomers have been gazing at the stars in the Black Hills. In 1956 the Rapid City Astronomical Society was formed, Hidden Valley Observatory (HVO) was dedicated in 1966, and in 1978 the organization was incorporated as the Black Hills Astronomical Society (BHAS). Between 1956 and the present day the members have hosted public star parties at remote sites and HVO, and been active in pursuing their interest in the night skies.  In 2021 the organization published a detailed and interesting history of the BHAS, HVO and its members which can be viewed here: History of the Rapid City and Black Hills Astronomical Societies, 1954-2020.
